How to Choose a Flattering Apron for Your Body Shape

Why can’t something so useful and protective also be pleasing to the eye? That question is at the heart of our Maybis aprons. I love an apron that feels comfortable, sits beautifully and makes me want to get on with whatever needs doing.

Of course, a flattering fit will look different on each of us. The length, the coverage and where the ties sit can all make a difference. So, what should you look for when choosing an apron for your body?

Begin with the fit

I believe that an apron—any apron—should work with your particular body shape. It should give you room to move, cover your clothing comfortably and feel good when you wear it.

Start with the bib. Does it cover the front of your top comfortably, without pulling across your chest or gaping when you move? Then look at where the waist ties sit. Try adjusting them until you find a position that feels comfortable and gives you a shape you like.

Check the coverage around your hips, too. A little extra fabric can give you room to bend and sit without the apron pulling tight. Generous coverage is useful, but you should still be able to walk and work freely.

Our standard Maybis apron measures 89cm from the top of the bib to the bottom edge and 80cm across the main body, excluding the ties. Comparing these measurements with an apron you already own—or holding a tape measure against yourself—can help you judge where it will sit.

We have made our aprons generously long with taller wearers in mind. If you prefer a shorter length, you can fold a little fabric over at the waist before fastening the ties. Take a moment to smooth and adjust it so it sits comfortably.

After all, an apron’s first job is to cover your clothing and protect it from the inevitable mess of getting things done!

Choose a fabric that feels right

The way a fabric falls makes a difference to how an apron looks and feels. We offer lighter and heavier weight options, both in 100% cotton.

Our lighter fabric has a softer drape, which may appeal if you prefer an apron that falls gently around your body. We know that, for some of our customers, softness is one of the most important things of all.

The heavier fabric has a crisper feel and gives the apron more structure. Your choice may come down to how you like the fabric to sit, as much as the tasks you wear it for.

In our own washing trials, both fabrics have washed and tumble dried well. If you tumble dry yours, we recommend removing it while slightly damp and smoothing it into shape to help reduce creasing. Always follow the care instructions supplied with your apron.

We use cotton fabric, hemming tape and thread, and launder every apron before it is sent to you.

Find your colours and patterns

Once you are happy with the fit, colour and pattern are a chance to make your apron feel like yours.

Our palette draws on earthy, timeless colours with a heritage feel, chosen to complement both traditional and contemporary homes. Choose a shade you enjoy wearing—your apron deserves that consideration just as much as the rest of your clothes.

Our botanical designs bring together our love of nature and traditional household textiles. We want them to feel equally at home in a farmhouse kitchen or a sleek, modern one.

Whether you prefer plain cotton or a botanical print, the aim is the same: an apron you feel comfortable in and reach for with pleasure.

A little heritage for everyday life

For me, putting on an apron is a small but meaningful part of getting ready to begin. You can read more about why I wear mine for more than just cooking in our “Apron Belly?” article.

Aprons connect us with generations of people who have cooked, made, cleaned and gardened before us. There is something lovely about continuing that everyday tradition.

Let’s keep putting them to good use—protecting our clothing, providing a handy pocket and helping us get on with the essential tasks of home and garden.
