Apron Belly? How the Right Kitchen Apron Can Help You Feel More Comfortable and Confident
I don’t know about you, but I had heard the term ‘apron belly’ for many years and hadn’t realised how it might relate to our Maybis apron.
I can’t disclose too much personal information, but I recently underwent two major, life-changing surgeries. I hadn’t realised quite how much the aftermath would affect me on a day-to-day basis.
Without consciously noticing it at first, there were certain times during the day when I felt more comfortable—and, strikingly, more confident. I sat with the questions, “Why am I more confident right now?” and “Why am I more comfortable?”
The surprising answer was that I felt most comfortable and, as it turns out, more confident when I was wearing my apron. I am able to tie it in such a way that it gives me a gentle feeling of support around my abdomen while also smoothing my silhouette.
Now, I know that this might sound like a sales pitch, but the truth is the truth—and if an apron helps me feel smoother, more supported and more comfortable, then I’m SURELY going to tell you about it.
What Is an Apron Belly?
The medical term commonly used is an abdominal panniculus, sometimes called an abdominal pannus.
It describes an overhanging fold of skin and fatty tissue extending from the lower abdomen—resembling the shape of an apron. It can develop or become more noticeable following pregnancy, weight gain, significant weight loss or changes to the abdomen after surgery.
There is nothing unusual or shameful about having an apron belly. Bodies change for all sorts of reasons, and those changes can affect not only how our clothes fit, but also how physically comfortable and confident we feel in them.
How Can an Ordinary Kitchen Apron Help?
Here is the important disclaimer: we are NOT promising that an apron will transform your body into something it is not. A kitchen apron is not shapewear or a medical support garment.
However, the right apron—with thoughtful pocket placement, good coverage and comfortably adjustable ties—can create a smoother silhouette and offer a gentle feeling of being held.
I don’t just wear my apron to cook. I wear it as often as I can reasonably get away with!
There is one particular occasion when, if I am feeling self-conscious, I have an excellent excuse to keep it on: when we are entertaining guests for a meal. It makes perfect sense that I would still be wearing my apron while serving dinner, clearing plates or popping back and forth to the kitchen—and it has literally never raised an eyebrow.
Yet beneath that perfectly ordinary kitchen apron, I feel less exposed. I am not worrying as much about the outline of my abdomen or wondering whether other people can see the changes that feel so obvious to me. I can simply enjoy our guests.
All that to say: let’s not only make aprons fashionable again—let’s begin seeing them as MORE than something that keeps our clothes clean while we cook.
An apron can be practical and beautiful, but it can also help us feel comfortable, covered and confident in the bodies we have today.
