The Colours We Are Loving This Winter
There is something about winter that seems to slow everything down. As the nights draw in, it feels as though the speed and vibrancy of summer draw in too. Instead of waking to a bright day and stepping comfortably out of bed, we find ourselves waiting for the room to warm up before making that cold morning dash to the bathroom—or hopping into the shower to warm and refresh ourselves.
Because I tend to style my home seasonally, I began thinking about the colours I naturally reach for during each season. That thought then led me to consider Maybis and the colours that represent winter. I realised that winter colours are actually timeless and can be used easily throughout the year when paired with the right accents.
Rather than treating ourselves, our homes and our wardrobes as entirely separate things, why don’t we unify them and allow them to quietly complement one another?
How Winter Changes the Colours We Wear
It didn’t occur to me until I began thinking about this topic, but winter doesn’t just influence how I style my home. The clothes I wear also change gradually—from the lighter, flowing colours of summer to rustic autumn shades, and then all the way through to my winter wardrobe, when I prefer comforting, soft and heavier fabrics. Needlecord is my particular favourite!
I even noticed that my nail colours change with the seasons.
I prefer lighter colours during spring and summer, followed by more neutral shades in autumn. In winter, however, I want to celebrate the season with deep claret red, navy, dark forest green, rich plum and gold—usually antique gold.
Even my UV gel nail collection changes at this time of year. Without consciously thinking about it, I begin adjusting my nail colours. I can’t be the only one?
Seasonal Nails That Last Beyond Christmas
I want my festive nails to outlive Christmas and carry me beautifully into the post-Christmas period. I think the best way to achieve that is through classic styling.
Instead of candy canes—although they are gorgeous—why not choose a delicate sprig of pine, a pinecone or even a gold stripe or two?
If you visit a nail technician, ask whether they are happy to apply your chosen nail decals for you. Alternatively, you can create your own seasonal nails at home.
So, let’s explore some beautiful winter colours that will add class and style to the Christmas period—and beyond.
A Timeless French Manicure
Let’s begin with something truly timeless: the French manicure.
Whether you choose to do your nails yourself or visit a nail technician, and whether you wear UV gel, polygel or acrylic, you simply can’t go wrong with a classic French manicure.
Before applying the final top coat, carefully cut out your chosen waterslide decals and place them in water for the amount of time recommended by the manufacturer. The clear decal will separate from its backing paper, allowing you to position it on the nail using a pair of tweezers. Alternatively, you can carefully lift it with a toothpick or a similar tool.
Place the decal exactly where you want it, remembering that less is often more—you don’t need a decal on every finger. Once it is completely dry, seal it beneath your clear top coat, following the instructions for the nail system you are using.
Classic Winter Navy
Navy is elegant, understated and incredibly easy to wear. It offers the richness of a dark winter shade while remaining softer than black, and it pairs beautifully with French tips, botanical details and touches of antique gold.
Rich Claret Red
Claret red feels festive without being limited to Christmas. Its deep, warm colouring works beautifully throughout winter and looks equally at home beside candlelight, evergreen foliage and richly coloured seasonal fabrics.
Beautiful Details for the Whole Season
So, whether you are fluffing up a seasonal cushion, setting your Christmas table or visiting family on Boxing Day and beyond, you can enjoy looking down and catching little glimpses of your beautiful seasonal nails.
By choosing timeless winter colours and classic details, your festive manicure can remain elegant long after Christmas Day has passed.
