How to Make Your Kitchen Sink Area Look Beautiful — and Keep It That Way
The kitchen sink deserves some style attention because it is the most-used workspace in the home.
Kitchens are the ‘heart’ of the home, and cookers (ovens or stoves) get all the glory because they are used at least once a day — and they are expensive…
But the humble kitchen sink? Well! It is the centre of operations in the kitchen: washing, rinsing, straining, soaking, children playing with water, and so much more!
Families spend MORE of their waking time in the kitchen than they realise. In some homes, it is more than in any other room in the house. This is why it is so important that your kitchen is a place you love spending time in.
So, let’s explore ways that we can make the kitchen sink a place we love to be, rather than just somewhere we have to be.
A tidy — and, let’s try to make it stylish — sink area can transform the whole kitchen. The sink area is an often-neglected space in the home. It’s utilitarian, and nothing that happens there seems particularly exciting or inspiring. Mostly, we want to leave the area as soon as we can and get on with other things.
At Maybis, we believe that the practical, hardworking parts of our homes deserve beauty and consideration too.
I want to try to inspire you with why I think the kitchen sink can be a place of calmness, warmth and refuge. I would even go so far as to say…a miniature spa experience! Well…it could be…
Imagine for a second that you have noticed a small stockpile of dishes in the sink. How do you feel? Does your heart ‘sink’? For me, it’s a sense of resignation.
Now imagine that you have styled your kitchen sink so nicely that you find yourself making excuses to be there! This is what I would love to help you achieve.
I am being REALLY real with you here…this is the before photograph of my OWN kitchen. Don’t judge me; we all have days like this…
Clear the area
Take everything away from the area…everything. The washing-up bowl, sponges, draining rack and any other items that are just hanging around there!
Give everything a deep clean
Get the heavy-duty cleaning products out — using them according to the manufacturer’s instructions — and give everything a jolly good scrub.
Rinse everything, check whether there are still any areas that need attention and, once everything is clean, wipe it all down with a dry microfibre cloth.
Add three things you love
Go and find three items from around your home that you love to look at or smell. These could be a candle, an ornament, a small vase of flowers or a pretty bowl of potpourri.
Most kitchens are designed with the sink near a window. If you have a windowsill, this is a wonderful spot for your beautiful items.
If you don’t have a windowsill, you can find some wonderful items that attach directly to the window. One simple but elegant idea is a test-tube vase that attaches to the glass with a suction cup. These are usually sold in sets of three. Place a single flower and some water in each vase, then attach them to the window. I love them arranged diagonally.
Once you are happy with your decorative items, return the draining rack if you have one — cleaned, of course. Now for something to add a little class…
Make the practical things beautiful too
Find a lovely dish, bowl or container to house your sponges or to drape your fresh, clean cloth over. You might also retrieve a beautiful hand-soap dispenser from a bathroom. Make sure that you wash your chosen dish, bowl or container regularly.
Keep it that way
At the end of each day, return anything that does not belong, rinse the sink and wipe down the surrounding area. Replace your cloth regularly and wash the container holding your sponges each week.
It only takes a few minutes, but it prevents clutter and water marks from gradually taking over again.
Now, I know that this isn’t a kitchen sink from a catalogue. However, I found these items around the house, and it didn’t cost me anything to transform the ‘swamp’ sink into a space where I want to spend time.
What we are aiming for is a kitchen sink styled to your tastes. Why should the main bathroom get all the attention and beautiful products when people are hardly in there?
You deserve to have a beautiful experience in every area of your home. We at Maybis hope these few steps put you on the path to experiencing the same warmth and calm at YOUR kitchen sink as we do at ours.
